1.2 million spaces but nowhere to park
Posted on | January 16, 2012 | No Comments
I was recently reminded of the phrase “the cobbler’s children have no shoes“, referring to a phenomena where people who are successful at doing something but don’t demonstrate that in their own backyard, or in this case, their parking lot.
An article in The Tennessean tells how Central Parking, a company which has 2,500 parking facilities and 1.2 million parking spaces, has run short of parking spaces at their headquarters. This causes employees to park on the nearby residential streets causing frustration to those who live there by blocking driveways and disrupting trash pickups. Perhaps I should send some sample designs of our Boomerang System, which could add parking spots while saving space. Read the article here Read more

Automated Parking Systems Receiving City Approvals
Posted on | December 26, 2011 | No Comments
As mentioned in an earlier post, approval from fire departments on the safety of automated parking is intergral in getting a project off the ground. An article in Build LA, the monthly newsletter of the LA Department of Building and Safety, explains more about how automated parking structures, widely accepted in Europe and Japan, are becoming acceptable as solutions for high-density parking here in the United States. Read it here. Read more

Park in ‘sky garages’ directly next to apartments
Posted on | December 8, 2011 | No Comments
Porsche Design Group has proposed a 57-storey ‘ultra-luxury’ tower where a robotic parking system will allow owners to park in ‘sky garages’ directly next to their apartments.
Plans for the 132-residence tower have been approved by Florida’s City of Sunny Isles Beach.
The Porsche Design brand was founded by Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the designer of the 911 sports car. “I could not envision a more exceptional project for our brand,” said Porsche Design Group CEO Dr Juergen Gessler. “The Porsche Design Tower would be representative of our company’s commitment to engineered luxury and the fundamentals that redefine luxury and deliver technically inspired products, such as this state-of-the-art parking system.”
The proposed building will feature three circular platforms at the building’s centre which operate as passenger-speed ‘automobile elevators’ equipped with sensors that will take vehicles and their owners to their designated floor. The cars will then be parked at one of 284 robotic parking spaces adjacent to the owners’ units.
“Our development team is confident this building will serve as a catalyst for other Porsche Design Towers throughout the world,” said Dezer Properties president Gil Dezer. “There would simply be no other building in the world with such unsurpassed technological and design elements. The design team engaged in conceptualizing the Porsche Design Tower has addressed every imaginable detail a potential owner might anticipate. It has been nothing short of a privilege working with such an esteemed group of dedicated professionals.”

Boomerang’s Robotic Valet Parking System touted as a safer alternative to conventional parking garages
Posted on | November 17, 2011 | No Comments
One of the hurdles that must be overcome with developing parking structures is meeting and/or exceeding fire codes. Atlantic City has seen its share of fires in parking garages that can present serious risks to life and property. After reviewing Boomerang’s new ‘Robotic Valet Parking System’, Fire Chief Dennis J. Brooks, of the Atlantic City Fire Department, wrote “this new parking system [Boomerang System] offered a number of safety features that cannot be achieved by the current conventional parking facilities.” He pointed out that the main feature he found attractive to the fire service was “the fact that each vehicle is locked, unoccupied and turned off while it is being stored and retrieved.” He goes on to say “It is my belief that as long as this system is installed as recommended and in accordance with all the building and fire codes, it offers a safer and more controlled environment than a conventional parking facility.” “I see this robotic parking system as reducing that risk.”
We’d like to thank Fire Chief Dennis J. Brooks for his observations.

It’s safety first with Automated, Robotic Parking
Posted on | November 16, 2011 | No Comments
I read an article the other day whose opening line was “Next time you barricade yourself inside a parking garage with an AK-47, keep an eye out for the flying garbage can.” The Miami-Dade Police Department has received the first permit issued by the Federal Aviation Administration to fly two robotic planes that would allow them surveillance ability without putting persons at risk during a standoff with a shooter that has a long rifle.
My immediate thought was that this would never be a problem in an automated, robotic garage. Give me a call and I will be happy to discuss parking alternatives that can prevent someone wanting to barricade themselves inside your “parking garage with an AK-47.” Safety for the people and cars is one of the main benefits of robotic parking systems.

Full Spectrum South bolsters Jackson State University’s green efforts
Posted on | September 23, 2011 | No Comments
Green building developer Full Spectrum South has pledged $2 million to Jackson State University (JSU) to bolster green efforts by both organizations, as well as supporting education for designing and building sustainable communities. One of these joint efforts between Full Spectrum South and JSU is Old Capitol Green, a mixed-use urban project in Jackson, Mississippi. Full Spectrum South hires interns from the JSU School of Urban and Regional Planning who use the project as a hands-on learning experience in the ways of urban planning and design, high-performance building practices and operations, and robotics.
Old Capitol Green’s first phase is building an office building, a residential complex, and a parking garage, all of which will perhaps become LEED certified. These areas will be used by JSU students as “living laboratories.” Old Capitol Green will be using the Boomerang robotic parking system, which moves parked cars around on pallets, reducing carbon emissions and traffic. Funding will come from the City of Jackson.
Carlton Brown, chief operating officer of Full Spectrum South, is optimistic about the collaboration, and sees the Old Capitol Green project as a positive step for Jackson’s future, saying, “Hopefully our financial commitment and our commitment to using our project as a living classroom will honor and extend the dedication of those who came before me.”

MCD parking lots stuck in limbo
Posted on | September 21, 2011 | No Comments
The development of parking lots by Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) appears to be in limbo as the civic body is yet to complete construction of the majority of the 41 projects conceived. According to the latest MCD report, the parking projects are stuck due to one reason or another, which include tendering and difficulty in getting permissions. The deadline for completion of most of the projects was last year but it is nowhere near completion even now and some projects have not even taken off, the report said. The projects included 22 conventional parking, four stack parking and 15 multi-level automated parking projects. One parking project has been completed and inaugurated while another has been scrapped.
